AfD celebrate as Union rely on their support for first time to win Bundestag vote, English subtitles

0:19 This debate and vote took place in the Bundestag on Wednesday 29th January.

The motion in question was not legally binding and was largely symbolic.

But the fact the Union relied on AfD votes to pass it was a big deal, as previously the Union would not even table a motion if there wasn't a clear majority from the political centre parties (Union, FDP, SPD and Greens) to support it.

No party wants to rely on support from the AfD to win any vote.

The motion called on the government to enact five measures:

1 - permanent border controls

2 - rejection of all attempts to enter the country illegally, including of asylum seekers

3 - an increase in deportations of those who are required to leave the country, and the taking into custody of those who are required to leave Germany

4 - more support for the German states in dealing with deportations

5 - measures regarding the right of residence of foreign criminals

It is notable that the perpertrator of the Aschaffenburg stabbings (22nd January) was a failed asylum seeker who should have been deported in late 2024.

Like the motion, the draft law was expected to pass only if the AfD supported it.

The draft law was an amendment of an existing asylum seekers law, and was largely concerned with restricting the right to family reunification.

Unlike Wednesday's motion, Friday's bill was narrowly rejected by 350 votes to 338.

This was because a number of Union and FDP members (who had supported Wednesday's motion) either did not show up to vote or abstained, possibly due to the controversy surrounding the AfD's support.
