Designed during the Cold War to counter the U.S. Navy’s Ohio-class SSBNs, it features a displacement of around 48,000 tons submerged and measures 175 meters (574 feet) in length.

The Typhoon carries 20 R-39 Rif (SS-N-20 "Sturgeon") intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), each with multiple nuclear warheads. It boasts a twin-pressure hull design, providing enhanced survivability and internal space, including relatively luxurious crew accommodations. The class also features a double-hulled construction, icebreaking capabilities, and advanced sound-dampening technology to reduce detectability.

Despite its formidable design, only one unit, Dmitry Donskoy (TK-208), remained in limited service for testing new missile systems until its reported retirement in 2023.
