SONS OF MY BROTHERS (2006)

SONS OF MY BROTHERS is a Serbian film from 2006 dealing with the cost and effect of war(s) upon a Serbian family. It was produced, writtan and directed by Siniša Kovačević.

SYNOPSIS:
When, on November 21, 1991, on the day of the patron saint of the Srećković clan, the feast of Saint Archangel Michael, Obrad Srećković, a peasant from Veliki Krčmar, set out to find his son Milan on the Vukovar battlefield, he brought “everything that a grandmother would pack for a soldier”: a cake, a roast, a sausage, a bottle of brandy, a letter from his girlfriend, and socks. Obrad somehow reaches the wastelands of Srem, but gets lost at dusk and, when he is slowly starting to panic, sees a military camp.
In the camp, he finds Milan Srećković from Veliki Krčmar, but he is not the soldier Obrad is looking for. Soon, another Milan Srećković from the same village appears, and when Obrad already suspects some military trickery and is ready to defend himself, Major Vukašin Katunac, the commander of the assembly area, appears with the real Milan, Obrad’s son.
The misunderstanding will soon be cleared up. The first Milan Srećković from Veliki Krčmar is Obrad's uncle, who died in Srem in 1914. The second Milan is Obrad's brother, who died in the same area, on the Srem Front, in 1944. Obrad will soon realize that he has stumbled upon a gathering place for the dead Serbian army who died in those areas, and who were not buried in their homeland. He realizes that his son is also dead, and since the dead do not age, all three Milans are 18 years old.
When he asks where he is from and when they explain that he was also "caught by a sniper near Jankovci", he will be relieved. He will thank God and his saint that something good happened to him on that holy day. At the same time, in a distant town, a funeral is taking place for the famous Katunac family. Major Vukašin Katunac, a hero of the Vukovar battlefield, is being buried. When, despite the opposition of the officers present, the family opens the coffin to say goodbye to the deceased once again, they find only two concrete slabs at the bottom of the coffin. No trace of the deceased. Major Katunac's wife and daughter immediately get in the car and head to the battlefield to look for him.
