Ingredients:
1 lb fresh green beans (trimmed and cut) or 2 cans (14.5 oz each) green beans, drained
2 tbsp butter
1 large onion, thinly sliced
1 tsp sugar (optional, for caramelizing)
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup
½ cup milk
½ cup sour cream (optional, for extra creaminess)
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
½ tsp salt
½ tsp black pepper
1 cup shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese (optional, for extra flavor)
1 ½ cups crispy French-fried onions
Instructions:
1. Preheat the Oven: Set to 375°F (190°C).
2. Blanch the Green Beans (if using fresh): Boil for 3-4 minutes, then transfer to an ice bath. Drain and set aside.
3. Caramelize the Onions: In a skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add sugar (if using) to enhance caramelization. Stir in garlic and cook for another minute.
4. Prepare the Sauce: In a large bowl, mix cream of mushroom soup, milk, sour cream, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Stir in caramelized onions and shredded cheese (if using).
5. Assemble the Casserole: Mix green beans into the sauce, then transfer to a greased 9x13-inch baking dish.
6. Bake: Bake uncovered for 20 minutes.
7. Add the Topping: Sprinkle crispy French-fried onions on top and bake for another 5-10 minutes until golden brown.
8. Serve and Enjoy: Let it cool slightly before serving.
