This was the last circle burner I built in the mid 80's.
This was the second #37 that we built. The last few photos are of the previous #37 that we won the first championship with and the last few photos were the very last race that year in 37a. AND the very last photo is that car when Ted and I bought after we set up his old Ford Falcon to run in the stock class the first year. We fought that car till mid season and we finally bought Dusty Roads (yes that is actually his name) car because Dusty was in the USAF and his CO told him he can't race any more. It's the last photo at the end..
Soooo we went to work on #37a in mid season and won our first championship that year. Ted was the best driver I ever had the privilege to crew chief for and we produced two championships in a row together...
The engine was a 377cid. We ran 180 headers. If you listen and know about that kind of exhaust system you can tell it from a mile away...
About the crashed #37. It was the last race of the season and they had put the stock class in with us. It was fun till one of our old frens decided to put Ted into the fence. Ted was fine. The car was totaled though. The only thing holding the engine in the frame was one motor mount. The transmission was broken off from the engine. What happened was the track had been worked up to the guard rails till the dirt covered the bottom rail. Ted was forced into the guardrail and the frame went under the top rail and hit an upright... BOOM!!!! Ted was out of the car by the time I got there and someone had given him a tea to drink.... On to the second championship we went....
The classes were Stock, Simi-Late Model, Late-Model and Wing Sprint. We were in the Simi-Late class...
