			The Power of Our Tongue
In Genesis 1, we read that God spoke the universe and everything on earth into existence. Every act of creation begins with "God said". Psalms 33:9 tells us,
"For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm."
And we read in Hebrews 11:3,
"By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible."
All of creation came about by the power of God's voice. As we are created in His image, He has also given us incredible power in our voice. Solomon teaches us in Proverbs 18:21,
"The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit."
And we read in Proverbs 15:4,
"The soothing tongue is a tree of life, but a perverse tongue crushes the spirit."
We have the choice as to how we employ our tongue, whether to bring life or to crush others. We can use it for good or evil, to lift up or tear down, to create peace or discord, to calm or to spur anger, to bring laughter or tears, to reconcile or tear apart, to love or hate, to unify or divide, to bring healing or injury.
Apostle Paul teaches us in Ephesians 4:29,
"Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen."
How do we ensure that we are using the power of our tongue to bring life and to build others up? First, we must examine our heart.
Jesus teaches us in Luke 6:45,
"A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of."
We must follow the old adage "think before you speak". We need to ask ourselves if our thoughts and feelings are in alignment with God. When we are out of alignment or are uncertain, then scripture says it is best to remain silent. We read in Proverbs 21:23,
"Those who guard their mouths and their tongues keep themselves from calamity."
Secondly, we should always ask God to help us as David does in Psalms 141:3,
"Set a guard over my mouth, Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips."
Through the help of the Holy Spirit, we can use the power of our tongue with more self-control, wisdom and compassion.
Let us be diligent in reading God's Word daily so our thoughts are in alignment with Him. And let us pray daily for support from the Holy Spirit to guide us as we interact with others. With these 2 keys we can be equipped to properly use our tongue as a power that brings life and builds others up
