Mar. 14, 1965 | George Wallace on “Face the Nation”
Mar. 14, 1965 - Alabama Governor George Wallace said today he will obey any “final” court order directing him to permit Negro demonstrators to march the 50 miles from Selma to Montgomery, Ala.
But at the same time, Wallace said the state will appeal any adverse order that is handed down on the issue as a result of hearings now being conducted by U.S. Distrct Judge Frank Johnson.
In an interview on CBS-TV’s “Face the Nation” and in a subsequent 40-minute press conference, the Governor gave few signs that his views on Alabama’s tense racial situation had been materially altered by his three-hour conference yesterday with President Johnson.
Although Wallace made it clear he intends to abide by all “final” Federal court orders on civil rights questions, he repeated that he opposes the new voting rights law sought by the President and hopes the 1964 rights law eventually will be repealed.
