Mar. 26, 1965 - President Johnson, in an angry response today to FBI arrests of four Klansmen as alleged conspirators in the Alabama murder of Viola Liuzzo, a civil rights activist from Detroit, urged Federal legislation to control terroristic activities of the Ku Klux Klan.
Johnson also called upon Congress to investigate the Klan with full cooperation of the Justice Department and the FBI.
Within minutes after the four men were apprehended in connection with the fatal shooting of Mrs. Liuzzo, the President appeared on nationwide radio and television to announce the arrests and denounce the Klan, which he referred to as “a hooded society of bigots.”
