The Original Sin - Written By Mark Spencer

What was the Original Sin? Many ministers and scholars think they know. But I was never satisfied with their answers. A popular belief is that defiance of God was the Original Sin. While defiance was one of the first sins, it was preceded by pride, which was preceded by envy. To discover the true Original Sin, we have to approach the event like a homicide detective. Detectives enter a crime scene after the crime has been committed. They gather evidence, and walk it back from there. Our crime scene is a tree with missing fruit. Adam and Eve have fallen from grace, and the garden is empty, save for a copy of the Genesis account. In that account, we find that Adam and Eve took, and ate the forbidden fruit, this in defiance of God. Why? They were beguiled by an evil entity called "The Serpent". What did the Serpent tell them?

The Serpent said: "You will not surely die! You will become like God, knowing good and evil."

This filled Eve with envy of what God knew, and her pride, newly kindled, made her believe that she deserved what God had, even though the Lord forbade she and Adam from eating that fruit. Why did God forbid this? Because the knowledge of good and evil would corrupt them in mind, spirit, and body, their entire triune nature. The result of this corruption would be death. God warned:

"On the day that you eat that fruit, you will surely die!"

But Adam lived to be 930 years old! So how were days measured in Eden? They couldn't see the sun with a permanent firmament between that star and them, and being immortal (before corruption) they couldn't feel time the way we do. Today, a thousand years would have to pass, to equal one of God's days. I don’t believe these Godly days are like they are for us. He’s not working against a clock that will eventually reach its final tick. God doesn’t grow old and die. I believe these Godly days are a measurement for creation, that each of the first six days were the equivalent of a thousand of our fallen years. I believe that Adam died in the same Godly day in which he ate that fruit. But let’s get back to the Original Sin.

YOU WILL SURELY DIE! That was what God told them. All the Serpent did, was tell them "that's not true". So what did Adam and Eve have to conclude, to make them feel that they wouldn't surely die? They HAD TO doubt the veracity (truthfulness) of God's Word. And what does the Gospel of John say about God's Word? It said that, in the beginning, the Word was with God, and the Word WAS God. Yeshua (Jesus) was with God, and He IS God. So Adam and Eve didn't just doubt an utterance, they doubted God. More specifically, they doubted Yeshua. There are no other sins before this, and for sin to thrive, you cannot trust Yeshua, who is TRUTH. So we know that doubting God made us unworthy of Eden, and God's Kingdom, how do we become worthy again? We become worthy by putting our absolute trust in God's Word, in the form of Yeshua. Losing faith in Him caused us to fall - having faith in Him brings us home again.
