Since the legalization of Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) in Canada in 2016, there have been 60,301 reported MAiD deaths up to 2023.

In 2023 alone, 15,343 individuals utilized MAiD, accounting for 4.7% of all deaths in Canada.

This reflects a 15.8% increase from the previous year.

The average age of MAiD recipients in 2023 was 77.6 years.

In the United States, where MAiD is legal in several states, there have been over 10,000 reported cases since Oregon first enacted its Death with Dignity Act in 1997.

For instance, in Oregon, from 2001 to 2022, 2,454 individuals have died using MAiD provisions.

These numbers indicate a growing utilization of MAiD in regions where it is legally permitted.
