I Was Called To The RESCUE After His Tractor Went KABOOM

My uncle called me saying that as he began to mow his field, he started to notice smoke coming out of the rear, followed by a BOOM. He shut the unit off and noticed his entire PTO shaft had come off. He tried to fix it himself with no luck. He called someone. They came out to estimate the repair. They told him that the repair of the drive train + a little bit of labor was going to cost just as much as an entire new machine. What could have happened to it? I have no clue. Possibly ran without oil? Not sure. Mechanics, chime in please. Anyways, He asked me to come help him mow his field, and I did just that with the biggest mower I have, the Toro Grandstand HDX 60" mower. I wish I had a bigger sit down zero turn for this job... Oh well.
