Erosion Control Circa 1934: The CCC's Fight Against Land Degradation
This 1934 film highlights the critical work of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in combating soil erosion across the United States. Through the construction of rock, wooden, and brush-enforced check dams, the CCC effectively controlled land drainage and reclaimed large, deep gullies caused by erosion. The film contrasts areas with and without check dams, demonstrating their impact on land preservation. Additional efforts included planting locust seedlings and honeysuckle bushes, and even blasting and tapering gully sides for stabilization. Directed by C.A. Lindstrom, this footage showcases the CCC's innovative techniques and dedication to environmental conservation during the Great Depression.
