What is "Working Out Your Own Salvation"?

I hear people quote Phil 2:12, "work out your own salvation," usually from people (including my younger self) that pick verses out to justify how they are living. I used to do it all the time. We all sin and come short, and no sin is different than the other in the eyes of God, but we all need to realize when we sin, and try to change our ways instead of twisting the Bible to justify it. Like always, I'm talking to myself also (as I prepare to work on a Sunday). I was rushed getting ready for the show, and I'm not trying to be a hypocrite, I am just speaking what's on my heart and mind as usual. I didn't want to let anyone down by not posting a video.
