Canadian Fans Boo U.S. Anthem, Spark Three Brawls as Team USA Wins Heated Showdown
Montreal, February 15, 2025 — Canadian hockey fans erupted in jeers during “The Star-Spangled Banner” ahead of Saturday’s 4 Nations Face-Off matchup, setting the tone for a chaotic, fight-filled battle that saw Team USA claim victory in Montreal.
As soon as Royal Canadian Air Force member David Grenon began singing, over 20,000 fans inside the Bell Centre unleashed a thunderous wave of boos, nearly drowning out the American anthem. The hostility peaked during the iconic line, “and the rockets’ red glare,” with the Canadian crowd jeering at full force.
By contrast, Canada’s national anthem, “O Canada,” was met with respectful silence and patriotic fervor.
Fists Fly in Response to Anthem Disrespect
Team USA wasted no time retaliating. As soon as the puck dropped, American forward Matthew Tkachuk squared off against Canada’s Brandon Hagel, setting off a brawl just seconds into play. Within moments, two more fights erupted, making for an explosive start to the game.
In total, three fights broke out in the first nine seconds, turning the matchup into what some fans compared to a boxing match on ice.
Social Media Reacts to America’s Hockey Brawl Victory
The heated clash sent shockwaves across social media, with Americans rallying behind Team USA.
“I didn’t care about this USA hockey game, but that was 19 fights ago,” joked Barstool Sports president Dave Portnoy on X.
Another user summed up the mayhem: “America beating the s**t out of Canada. Three fights in nine seconds, America won all three—wasn’t even close. Bunch of maple syrup-drinking, moose-riding, leaf-loving commies.”
Trudeau Watches as Trump Pushes for Canada’s Statehood
Adding to the tension, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau attended the game wearing his country’s maple leaf logo. Meanwhile, President Trump continues to push for closer U.S. ties with Canada, once again suggesting that the country would be better off as America’s 51st state.
“Look, the people would pay much less tax than they’re paying right now, they’d have perfect military protection,” Trump said from the Oval Office last week.
“Why would we pay $200 billion a year in subsidies to Canada when they’re not a state?” he added, referencing the trade deficit between the two nations.
The hostility inside the Bell Centre—both on and off the ice—was yet another reminder of the growing divide between the two nations, with tensions boiling over in one of the fiercest hockey matchups in recent memory.
