Maya Hawke Criticizes Casting Based on Social Media Following
Los Angeles – Stranger Things star Maya Hawke has spoken out against the growing trend of casting actors based on their social media following rather than their talent. The actor-singer, who is not a fan of platforms like Instagram, revealed that follower count plays a significant role in getting projects greenlit in the industry today.
“I don’t care about Instagram. Instagram sucks,” Hawke said, emphasizing her dislike for social media culture. However, she acknowledged that producers often require directors to cast actors with a certain number of followers to secure funding for films and series. “Right, well just so you know, if you have over this many followers, you can get the movie funded. It’s a really confusing line to walk,” she added.
Hawke’s comments highlight the increasing influence of social media metrics in Hollywood, where an actor’s online presence can sometimes outweigh their acting abilities in securing roles. Many industry professionals have raised concerns about this trend, arguing that it prioritizes marketability over artistic merit.
Despite this, Hawke has managed to build a successful career based on her performances rather than her online presence. She continues to focus on acting and music, staying true to her craft while navigating the modern entertainment industry’s evolving dynamics.
