The Depot Workshop - Episode 4: Converting an AT&SF GP20 to a GP20u.

Sam is working in his Depot Workshop converting an HO Scale AT&SF 1100 Class GP20 to a 3000 Class GP20u.

EMD introduced the GP20 in 1960 and the Santa Railway purchased 75 of them. Santa Fe Railway assigned the new units to the 1100 Class, which were numbered 1100 - 1174. Three GP20s could do the work of four F3s.

In 1969 Santa Fe renumbered them into the 3100 Class and repainted into the yellow warbonnet paint scheme but mostly unchanged except for the addition of a rotary beacon on top of the cab.

Starting in 1977 they were remanufactured at Santa Fe's Cleburne Shops and were assigned to the 3000 Class - 3000 - 3074. The 3000 Class received air conditioning, D77 traction motors, EMD's 645 engine, and yellow warbonnet paint scheme and some received smoke lifters.
