Are book blurbs going away?

I think there's too much hoopla around Simon and Schuster's announcement that their attitude toward book blurbs is now "meh."

But I would like the publishing industry to join the 21st century when it comes to marketing. Change is happening, but it's slow. And I'm not sure slow works so well in today's everything-happening-at-once online world.
