All the decisions made sense at the time. Some were even valid ... but Nature wasn't going to make it that easy and an early escape attempt is all smooth sailing. Until the beneficial current shoves us into a huge slush ice pack that not only traps us in the middle of a miles-wide channel but tears apart critical patches on the boat.
The timing was deadly ... locked in slush, unable to push through or turn back. And even if the distant shores could be reached, this was a long stretch of vertical rock walls.
It all came due at once. We were going to die and it was my fault.
