Black Skimmer Colony, Day One Hatching Begins

I call this Day One because the Black Skimmer eggs have begun to hatch. I found two recently hatched chicks, the oldest one is already being fed. The second chick, Whitey, hatched from a pure white egg. This year, only one scrape (nest) had white eggs, typically the eggs are a pale buff or off-white color, with a mottled pattern of brown or dark spots and blotches.
