Amsterdam Island, or Île Amsterdam, is a small French territory in the southern Indian Ocean, covering 55 km². It lies about 3,200 km from Madagascar, Australia, and Antarctica. The island is volcanic, with its highest point, Mont de la Dives, reaching 867 meters. It has a mild oceanic climate (14 °C average temperature) and is home to the Martin-de-Viviès research station, hosting around 30 scientists.
