I'd always thought that the Boycott was a Jewish economic weapon. Despite that the most famous boycott I'd heard of was staged by Southern Blacks, (then called Coloreds) in Montgomery, Alabama in 1955. Further elucidation taught me that among Jewish merchants, boycotts were threatened by Jewish organizations if said merchants didn't contribute a portion of their profits to the organizations. This is where the "gold star" seems to have come from. "Approved" merchants would receive a gold star which indicated that they were worthy of patronage.

The origins of the "Boycott," or so named, is less than 200 years old, although it may have been a thing, by another or even no name, in earlier times.
