Germany held its elections last Sunday
Germany held its elections last Sunday, with the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) securing 28.5% of the vote, making it the most-voted party. Meanwhile, Alternative for Germany (AfD) made historic gains, reaching 20%, doubling its support from 2021.
The country remains deeply divided, with many who lived under communism voting overwhelmingly for AfD in search of real change.
However, political betrayal came quickly. Less than 24 hours after winning, CDU leader Friedrich Merz announced that he will not close Germany’s borders, despite making it a key campaign promise. This sudden U-turn appears to be a maneuver to form a coalition with the Social Democrats, proving that immigration control is not truly a priority for his party.
Germany had a real chance for change but instead is stuck with the same failed policies.
