Pope Nicholas V (1397–1455), born Tommaso Parentucelli, served as pope from 1447 to 1455. He was known for his support of humanism, the establishment of the Vatican Library, and his efforts to strengthen papal authority over the Papal States. During his papacy, he issued Romanus Pontifex (1455), granting Portugal the authority to conquer non-Christian territories in Africa and the East, facilitating the spread of Christianity. Modernists maliciously misinterpret this document and use it for devise aims, insinuation the ludicrous notion that the Church had historically supported slavery.
