History, Architecture of Saint Augustine Nou Church/Convent Barcelona Since 1728

The Saint Augustine Nou Church &Convent in Barcelona was built in the 18th century for the Augustinian order, replacing an older convent affected by the construction of the Ciutadella Fortress. Work began in 1728 but faced delays and was completed around 1800.

Over the years, the convent was damaged by wars and revolutions, including the Napoleonic occupation (1808-1814) and the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). It was repurposed multiple times—used as a theatre, factory, and storage space. The church survived and became a parish in 1836, later undergoing several restorations.

Architecturally, the unfinished façade features stone and brick, large arches, and Corinthian columns. The interior includes a barrel-vaulted nave, elliptical dome, side chapels, and a richly decorated presbytery.
