New Delhi Railway Station 11 YEARS AGO

Welcome to the bustling heart of India's transportation system, the New Delhi Railway Station! 🚉 In this video, I take you on a journey back to 2014, revisiting the vibrant and energetic atmosphere of one of the busiest stations in the country. Delhi has always fascinated me, and every visit fills me with awe at the incredible energy that defines this city.

Before the new imperial capital of New Delhi was established in 1911, the Old Delhi railway station served as the city’s central hub. The Agra-Delhi railway line ran through what is now known as Lutyens' Delhi, passing by landmarks like the India Gate (formerly the All-India War Memorial) and Rajpath. In 1924, the railway line was relocated along the Yamuna River to make space for the new capital, and the Minto (now Shivaji) and Hardinge (now Tilak) bridges were constructed.

The East Indian Railway Company oversaw the creation of the New Delhi Railway Station in 1926. Initially built as a single-story structure with a single platform, it was located between Ajmeri Gate and Paharganj. Though the government initially proposed building the station in Connaught Place’s Central Park, the Railways rejected this plan as impractical. In 1927-28, the New Delhi Capital Works project was completed, laying down nearly 8 kilometers of new railway lines.

The station played a key role in the 1931 inauguration of New Delhi, with the Viceroy and royal retinue entering the city through the newly built station. Over time, more structures were added to the station, and the original building served as a parcel office for many years.
