Elon Musk’s Bold Move: Why He Emailed Every Federal Employee
At today’s Cabinet meeting, President Donald Trump quickly turned the floor over to Elon Musk, who was asked about the controversial email he sent to all federal employees asking, “What did you do last week?”
Musk took the opportunity to clarify the reasoning behind the email and the broader goal of ensuring efficiency within the federal government.
"The purpose of the email was simple," Musk stated. "We need to ensure that the people employed by the government are actually contributing in a meaningful way. If someone cannot articulate their contributions, we have to ask if they should remain in their position."
Musk emphasized that this approach is just "common sense." He stated, "The only people that should be working in the federal government are people actually doing their job well. Period."
The email, sent in collaboration with the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), was intended as a basic accountability check. Musk explained that there are concerns about inefficiencies, outdated processes, and even cases of "phantom employees"—people who may not exist but are still receiving paychecks.
"This isn’t about cutting for the sake of cutting," Musk continued. "This is about making sure that taxpayer dollars are being spent responsibly. Government should be run with the same principles of accountability and efficiency as a well-managed business."
The response to Musk’s email was significant, with over a million federal employees replying with detailed accounts of their weekly tasks. Musk and his team at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) are now reviewing the responses to determine where improvements can be made.
"At the end of the day, this is about making government work better for the people," Musk concluded. "If we don’t take action now, inefficiencies will continue to grow, and that is simply not sustainable."
As expected, Musk’s remarks sparked debate, with some praising his straightforward approach and others questioning whether this level of oversight is necessary. Regardless, it’s clear that Musk is determined to bring efficiency and accountability to the federal workforce.
