New Franklin, OH - A 63-year-old woman was rescued early Thursday morning in New Franklin after falling through the ice on Turkeyfoot Lake in the area of Lahm Drive.
The New Franklin Fire Department says they were called to the scene at 1:47 a.m. after the initial caller “reported that they could hear screaming but were unable to see anything due to the fog.”
When a police officer first arrived, they reported that it appeared two people had broken through the ice.
“One person had made it out on their own, but the second and was still struggling in the water,” according to a press release. “The police officer, placing his own life at risk, used a nearby canoe to reach the person and hold on to them until New Franklin Fire personnel in cold water exposure suits reached the victim and removed them from the water. South Summit Water Rescue personnel arrived on scene and assisted in getting everyone safely back to shore.”
Officer Dan Kulcsar and his partner learned that in the foggy elements, two women in a vehicle had veered off the road onto Turkeyfoot Lake, going under. One woman had already escaped the ice on her own.
Kulscar says he knew it was critical to keep the woman talking.
"A human can't physically understand or comprehend anything," he explained to 3News. "Their body's completely shutting down because of the cold. All they're thinking about is how cold they are, and you just got to keep talking to them, just to keep them calm for that, and i knew that female had to be in the water for a while."
Kulscar held on to the woman until New Franklin fire crews arrived in cold water exposure suits to pull her out.
"In our job, you're trained to stay calm and not get amped up and try to keep that person calm until other units arrive to assist in getting her out," he added.
The woman was suffering from severe hypothermia and was taken to the hospital. The other woman had gone into a nearby home to get warm. Crews have still not found the vehicle.
