James Earl Files (born January 24, 1942) is a former American prisoner and self-proclaimed hitman who has claimed to be the "grassy knoll shooter" responsible for the fatal headshot in the assassination of President John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963. Files asserts he was a contract killer for both the CIA and the Chicago Mob, alleging involvement in a conspiracy orchestrated by these entities to eliminate JFK. Born in Alabama, Files grew up in Illinois and reportedly became entangled in organized crime and covert operations early in life. He spent over two decades incarcerated at Stateville Correctional Center in Joliet, Illinois, for what he claims was an act of self-defense against a government attempt on his life—an attempted murder of two police officers in 1991. Released from prison in 2016, Files later settled in Chicago. In 2018, he married Pamela Ray and embraced Christianity, being baptized in Lake Michigan. Despite his detailed confessions, which he shared through interviews and books, his claims remain controversial and unverified by official investigations, with many historians and researchers questioning his credibility.

Pamela J. Ray is an author and researcher best known for her collaboration with James Files, documenting his claims about the JFK assassination. Originally from Portland, Oregon, Ray moved to Hawaii in 1982, where she lived for over 27 years before relocating to Chicago. A self-described born-again, Spirit-filled Christian, she was politically active in the early 1990s as a volunteer Executive Secretary for the Hawaii Christian Coalition, participating in voter registration drives and state conventions. Once a fan of Rush Limbaugh, Ray later identified as a political independent, driven by a commitment to uncovering truth and equity. Her work with Files began with extensive correspondence and monitored phone calls while he was imprisoned, culminating in books like Interview with History: The JFK Assassination (2007) and Primary Target: JFK – How the CIA Used the Chicago Mob to Kill the President (2020). Ray married Files in May 2018, and the couple has since attended a Christian church together in Chicago, reflecting her deep faith and dedication to sharing Files' story, despite the risks and controversy it has entailed.
