The Trump administration has said that Ukraine joining NATO is "not back on the table" after Ukrainian President Zelenskyy offered to resign from the presidency in exchange for membership. National Security Advisor Mike Waltz reiterated Trump's position, stating they don't want "United States troops essentially obligated immediately in terms of Article 5 or to have U.S. troops coming directly in for the offense of Ukraine."⁠
