So it is that we continually and rightly marvel at the 100 or so analogies between Joseph and Jesus… but unless we put it in New Testament context, the lesson is admired but falls short of producing the loving faith in the heart that the Lord intended. Joseph ‘died’ (so to speak) and was in prison and was resurrected that his brethren (we also) might be ‘saved’ that they (we) all might be reconciled back unto the father/Father. Not saved for themselves (ourselves), but saved from themselves (ourselves)… by drawing upon His grace to become the First Resurrection ‘sons of God.’

Joseph, who was theocentric (God-centered), spent 13 years developing intimacy with God. Especially the last years while he was in prison. Gone is self-consciousness, pride, presumption, etc… now there’s only selflessness found in God. He, now being found in his selflessness, is a type for Jesus the Son of Man… so also is he the type for those ‘in Christ’ who seek for that selflessness. Jesus said to believers after His resurrection “these works and greater works shall you do.” Modern-day Christians tend to think generally this means in terms of the gifts of the Holy Spirit… and to this is assigned no wrong, but it is yet narrowness of thinking. As seen in Paul’s declaration that there is a “more excellent way” in leading us unto spiritual maturity in sonship… the ‘better way’ being “love” (developed in love).

There is no doubt that after reading what Paul wrote in the 13th Chapter of 1st Corinthians that “love” developed in the heart of the believer is far far greater than all the ‘power gifts’ of the Holy Spirit seen in Chapter 12 put together. Love developed by the power of the Holy Spirit in the believer who is yielded to the love of the Father is the far greater work and the ‘goal’ or ‘aim’ of New Testament instruction of ‘Love.’ (1st Timothy 1:5 nrsv reb nab njb and Philippians 1:9) Love is what answers to a spirit of wisdom and understanding in the knowledge of God. (That being said, a believer who has become a lover of God and man {one that is walking and developing in the Truth and applying it to themselves} will almost surely manifest in the supernatural.)

Along these same lines our lesson falls… that “…all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to His purpose.” This can be grasped if we have eyes to see and take it to heart… and if we keep our eyes on who we are in Him (and that being while we are set upon on all sides by contrary circumstances, recognizing them for what they are: “lying vanities” ...not that they are not real and don’t matter… but they are not the Believer’s reality). Let not our eyes focus on circumstances and let them dictate what we believe… there is a way that seemeth right unto a man. Let us not grow impatient while God molds us by those circumstances to the good… but let us keep our eyes on the “prize…” the goal of our loving faith. Everyone will experience the storms spoken of in Matthew 7, which satan intends to use to destroy our faith, but God uses them to shape and form us into the image of His Son. What He began in us, He will finish… if we remain steadfast unto the end. “Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof.” [Ecclesiastes 7:8]

That is the way it was with Joseph, who suffered (“if need be” - 1st Peter 1:6) until the loving image of Christ was formed and God raised him up out of the ‘Pit’ and vindicated and rewarded him. Let us, in loving faith, be patient and persevere… denying our self-centeredness, taking up our cross, in remembering love-consciousness and follow Him. Surrendering all, (everything that has to do with the ‘old man,’ and all religious theology and psychology) is not just sentimentally singing a song about surrendering or mentally assenting to surrendering, but actually living a life of surrender to Jesus Christ as Lord. Who we are outside of church shows what’s inside us and whether we are surrendered or not.

The type/shadow of Joseph as related to the reality of Jesus in the Anti-type (that the shadow pointed to)…

“Then Pharaoh sent and called -- Joseph, and they brought him hastily out of the dungeon: and he shaved himself, and changed his raiment, and came in unto Pharaoh.”…And Pharaoh said unto his servants, Can we find such one as this is, a man in whom the Spirit of God is? And Pharaoh said unto Joseph… Thou shalt be over my house, and....
