In ancient Egypt, the most well-known method of testing pregnancy was to have a woman urinate on a bag of wheat and barley seeds; if the seeds sprouted, it was considered a positive pregnancy test, with the type of grain that grew first sometimes interpreted as indicating the sex of the baby - barley for a male, wheat for a female.
