Spot The Iguana! Perfect Camouflage
Green iguanas are green primarily for camouflage. Their coloration helps them blend into the lush foliage of their natural habitat, which includes trees and dense vegetation in rainforests and tropical environments. This makes it harder for predators like birds of prey, snakes, and mammals to spot them.
Their green color comes from specialized skin cells called chromatophores, which contain different types of pigments. Beneath these are iridophores, which reflect light and can enhance the green appearance. This combination allows iguanas to slightly adjust their shade, appearing brighter or duller depending on their surroundings and mood.
Young iguanas tend to be bright green for better camouflage in the treetops, while adults may develop darker, more varied tones (olive, brown, or even orange during breeding season) based on age, environment, and social interactions.
