Scammers use AI to clone victim's voice in elaborate fraud attempt

Michael Campbell, an on-air contributor for Global News, was the target of fraud in a sophisticated scam involving emails, phone calls and even his voice being cloned.

"The sophistication was impressive. These people are professionals," he said.

After receiving a few calls about an "unauthorized transfer" that led to a conversation with a so-called fraud investigator, Campbell watched as funds appeared in his online banking.

His bank then received a phone call from someone impersonating him using AI technology, asking to put through $10,000 e-transfer, which the bank blocked.
