Greenland set for "historic" independence vote as Trump continues call to join with US
U.S. President Donald Trump reiterated his interest in acquiring Greenland during a joint session of Congress Tuesday night. He painted a picture of prosperity and safety for the "incredible people" of the island, an autonomous territory of the kingdom of Denmark.
Noa Redington, an analyst and former adviser to previous Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt, said Greenland's election on March 11, Tuesday would be “historical.”
“After the election, there will be a new government in Greenland and it's very likely that there will be a process talking about independence, real independence, for the first time between Denmark and Greenland,” Redington said.
Meanwhile, retired Copenhagen resident Vibeke Baekgaard said “I don't think Trump is serious, not at all. He only wants to be powerful and he doesn't think about the consequences.”
Shane Woodford, a Canadian living in Copenhagen, expressed his worries about the global implications, saying it was "scary."
