Host Steve Ordower had the distinct honor of covering the All Black National Convention, held just outside of Chicago, in Lombard Illinois, in October of this year - 2024. He felt as if he was invited to an important family meeting that was filled with the spirit of love, self-reflection, critical thinking combined with a willingness to have tough conversations, empowerment, and an absolute commitment to the Black Community. Spearheaded by Dr. Boyce Watkins, who created the Black Business School- that provides culturally relevant business education to the Black Community, this convention’s purpose is to chart the course of the future of the black community. In his words. “By educating our children, building economic independence, and supporting our own, we secure the freedom, success, and spiritual elevation of generations to come.” “This convention is about taking ownership of our future.” Over 60 experts from around the world came to share their wisdom over 3 days on topics such as economics, education, health, politics and spirituality. Bob Hercules is an independent filmmaker and co-owner of Media Process Group — a Chicago-based production company. Hercules' work has been seen widely on PBS, Discovery Channel, IFC, The Learning Channel and in film festivals around the world. Herculesʼ latest film, Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise, premiered at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival and went on to win 19 awards on three continents. Host Bob Hercules sat down with attorney Flint Taylor to discuss the murder of Black Panther leader, Fred Hampton in 1969, who is the subject of the recent film, “Judas & The Black Messiah.” With five Oscar nominations, including for best picture, this movie ultimately took home an Academy Award for Daniel Kaluuya’s performance as Fred Hampton in the Best Supporting Actor category. Along with his partner, Jeff Haas, in the People’s Law Office, Flint Taylor takes us through the journey of how they uncovered and proved the truth about what happened to Fred Hampton and fellow Black Panther, Mark Clark. They were able to alter the public’s perception being put forth by Cook County State’s attorney Edward v. Hanrahan and other public officials that the Panthers were a terrorist organization and were the aggressors in this altercation. Even though the media reported this fabrication initially as the truth, these two remarkably persistent lawyers were able to shine a light on the orchestrated assassination of Fred Hampton which was part of a larger Counterintelligence program initiated by the FBI, aimed at surveilling, infiltrating, discrediting, disrupting and neutralizing American political organizations and leaders deemed subversive. Flint Taylor is an American human rights and civil rights attorney based in Chicago, Illinois, who has litigated many high-profile police brutality, government misconduct and death penalty cases. Taylor has pursued public interest law to take on allegations of corrupt police tactics and wrongful convictions in the city of Chicago and elsewhere. Much of what we think is Left or Right politically actually has shifted over time - and this paradigm has become a significant stumbling block for citizens to view issues on a case-by-case basis that would allow for a substantive understanding of a given issue in a nuanced way. Instead, and consequently, this Left/right divide incentivizes people to lump issues together into a tribal identity, which creates a psychological barrier to useful and empowering insight on important matters. This ubiquitous and insidious paradigm conditions us in the U.S. to view political issues through a powerful filter, which oftentimes has us discount perspectives from the “bad” tribe without fully understanding the perspective in the first place. This show will investigate the beginnings of Public Relations and propaganda with people such as Edward Bernays (the nephew of Sigmond Freud) who has been criticized for manipulating public opinion, often in ways that undermined individual autonomy and democratic values. His best-known campaigns include a 1929 effort to promote female smoking by branding cigarettes as feminist "Torches of Freedom", and his work for the United Fruit Company in the 1950s, connected with the CIA-orchestrated overthrow of the democratically elected Guatemalan government in 1954. And, Ivy “Leadbelly” Lee who preceded Bernays, who many historians credit him with originating modern crisis communications. He was retained by the Rockefellers in 1914, initially to represent Standard Oil, after the bloody repression of the coal mining strike in Colorado known as the Ludlow Massacre.” Both Bernays and Lee were masters at shaping perspective on behalf of corporations and governments, appealing directly to the subconscious mind, often undetectable to the general public.
