AUGUSTINE ON JESUS AS THE ANGEL OF THE LORD

I address Augustine's teaching that the OT appearances of God were neither Christ nor the Godhead, but created angels who spoke on behalf of God. In adopting this view, the great saint went against the unanimous teaching of the Christians, including that of his own mentor St. Ambrose. I do show how his view contradicts the concept of agency employed by anti-Trinitarian heretics, but also demonstrate why he is wrong on this issue.
