On August 3, 2023, Steven G. Jimenez, 39, from Santa Fe, engaged in a dangerous high-speed chase with New Mexico State Police after allegedly taking an SUV following a verbal altercation. Despite being a registered owner, the vehicle was initially reported stolen by a woman involved in the dispute with Jimenez. The chase involved multiple aggressive maneuvers by Jimenez, including driving head-on towards oncoming traffic, forcing vehicles off the road, rear-ending a police car, brandishing a tire iron, and attempting to hit a bicyclist.

The pursuit ended when Jimenez's vehicle became stuck on the road shoulder. A bystander assisted the officer in handcuffing Jimenez after he attempted to flee on foot, assaulted the police car, and tried to steal the bystander's truck. During the arrest, Jimenez resisted, attempting to bite the officer and reach for his gun.

Jimenez was booked on nine charges, including aggravated battery on a peace officer, attempted motor vehicle theft, and reckless driving. Despite his history of violating release terms in a felony DWI case by removing a GPS monitor, he was granted a $10,000 unsecured bond and house arrest with a new GPS monitor during a subsequent hearing. A new arrest warrant was issued following a review of his release conditions in another case. Jimenez faces several upcoming hearings, including one for the DWI case and a preliminary hearing for the recent charges.
