What is the purpose of the Department of Education?

PresidentDonald Trump has his government-slashing eyes on the Department of Education. He told the United States Secretary of Education, Linda McMahon, to "put herself out of a job." The political left is in a panic over the potential loss of this 40 year institution that, theoretically, is supposed to improve the educations of America's children.

What is the real purpose of the Department of Education?
Is there a record of success or measurable improvement of the education of America's children?
