Why Replacing Butter With Plant Oils Can Boost Heart Health
A groundbreaking study spanning 33 years with over 200,000 participants shows that replacing butter with plant-based oils like soybean, canola, and olive oil can significantly improve heart health and longevity. Researchers found that consuming just a teaspoon less of butter daily and replacing it with plant oils was linked to a 17% lower mortality risk. Those who consumed more plant oils (around 25 grams daily) had a 16% lower risk of early death, while high butter intake (13–14 grams daily) increased the risk by 15%. Additionally, an extra 10 grams of plant oil daily was associated with an 11% lower risk of cancer-related death and a 6% lower risk of cardiovascular death. Experts, including the American Heart Association, recommend limiting saturated fats (like those in butter) to less than 6% of daily calories and replacing them with healthier polyunsaturated and unsaturated fats found in plant oils. Nutrition expert Marie-Pierre St-Onge from Columbia University emphasizes focusing on the benefits of plant-based oils rather than fearing butter. Despite online claims, there’s no scientific evidence that seed oils are harmful—instead, diets rich in plant oils and low in animal fats are consistently linked to better health and longer life.
