03.09.25 "We Need to Ask, Not Understand"

As I first read and studied ACIM it became obvious to me, early on, the Holy Spirit was very important in the whole ACIM healing process. This is reflected in a healing quotation I have challenged the my Healing Team to be thinking about this week. "The Holy Spirit does not work by chance, and healing that is of Him always works. Unless the healer always heals by Him, the results will vary." (Tx.7.44) If we want dependable healing then we have to do it with the Holy Spirit's help.

As clear as this is stated above, many people are still tying to figure out healing on their own and NOT involve the Holy Spirit in the process. When I experience ACIM students do this I often wonder if they are even reading the same book I am. The involvement with the Holy Spirit is so foundational I just don't see how people can miss it.

"In everything be led by [the Holy Spirit] and do not reconsider. Trust Him to answer quickly, surely, and with love for everyone." (Tx.13.81) I'm going to assume that we all know the meaning of the word "everything" and resist the temptation to pull up the dictionary definition. We need to let go of the idea that there is anything that we need to understand, or any profound spiritual attunement that we need to obtain before we can heal and be healed. We only need to sincerely turn to the Holy Spirit and ask.

Why are so many not willing to do directly and simply ask? Ultimately it must be because they don't really want to be healed. ACIM tells us that laid on top of that foundation is the idea that it is personally insulting the Holy Spirit's role and our role seem so disproportionally important. "And it is very hard for you to realize that it is not personally insulting that your contribution and the Holy Spirit's are so extremely disproportionate. You are still convinced your understanding is a powerful contribution to the truth and makes it what it is. Yet we have emphasized that you need understand nothing." (Tx.18.39)

Our understanding makes no contribution to the truth of healing, and we need understand nothing. Healing is within everyone's grasp right now. We just have to ask for it from the One who cannot fail. "Ask and you will be answered. Seek and you will find." (WkBk.72.14) That's a very clear teaching isn't it? It's not symbolic. It's not a metaphor. It's a simple pledge and guarantee.
