Located at the former World Trade Center site, it features two 1-acre square reflecting pools, marking the footprints of the Twin Towers. Designed by architect Michael Arad and landscape architect Peter Walker, the pools include North America's largest man-made waterfalls, symbolizing loss and remembrance. The bronze parapets surrounding the pools bear the names of 2,977 victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks and the 1993 WTC bombing. Opened on September 11, 2011, the memorial is part of a 16-acre redevelopment, including the One World Trade Center and the 9/11 Museum, which preserves historical artifacts.
