Rubio stated that the canceled programs "did not serve, and in some cases even harmed, the core national interests of the United States." Meanwhile, Elon Musk, who backed the cuts through his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), responded on X: "Tough, but necessary. Good working with you."

Despite reports of a heated argument between Rubio and Musk during a Cabinet meeting with Trump, the former president denied any tensions, calling the rumors "fake news." Trump posted on Truth Social: "ELON AND MARCO HAVE A GREAT RELATIONSHIP!"
