Are you struggling? Are you in pain? The poetry in this book is an expression of the real pain I experience now, but also of the eternal, confident hope available to all who trust Jesus. At the beginning of March 2017, at the age of 26, I became so sick and wracked with pain, I wanted to die. As I have journeyed through the past, nearly 8 years, I have forgotten what it is like not to be in pain.
Through many tear-soaked times of prayer and Bible study, as I reached out to the Lord Jesus for answers, I determined, by His good grace, that life is worth living. All life, even a life spent in pain, is a good gift from Jesus Christ, our Creator.
The reason I titled this book, A Poetic Pilgrimage, is because in an ultimate sense we are all pilgrims. We are all traveling through this world to an ultimate and final destination. Our pilgrimage through this fallen world, that is languishing under the curse of sin, is a difficult one in which suffering of various kinds is unavoidable. This suffering is bad, but one good result of it is that it helps us to realize all is not as it should be.
For my part, Jesus has transformed my painful journey into a hope-filled, poetic pilgrimage, and He has strengthened and softened my heart through this trial. Poetry, literature, music, and other artforms help us to transcend our immediate surroundings to contemplate what lies beyond.
In this collection of poems I lament the suffering we all face, reflect on the brevity of life, and offer up sacrifices of praise and worship to Jesus Christ, the Most High God, who has not left us alone to die on this pilgrimage.
