Garden Beds

Every year in late February or March, we start to amend parts of our garden to ensure a large harvest and healthy plants. Since our annual crops will get fresh soil, they usually do not need a spring amendment, we just give them compost throughout the growing season.

Today we amended our perennial beds with compost and mulch. The compost gives these plants much needed nutrition and the mulch ensures the plants don’t dry out throughout the growing season, allowing them to retain moisture. To do this, I put about 1-2 inches of compost throughout each bed, and followed up with a thick layer of mulch. Doing this forms the foundation to a very healthy garden, builds rich soil, and allows the plants to keep producing for years to come. Stay tuned for how we plant and maintain our annual garden crops!
