The Eagle shipwreck is one of the most famous dive sites in Islamorada, Florida, offering a spectacular underwater experience for divers of all levels. This intentionally sunken freighter rests in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, approximately six miles off Lower Matecumbe Key, and has become a thriving artificial reef.

History of the Eagle
Originally named Eagle Tire Company, the ship was a 287-foot-long freighter built in 1962. It was primarily used for cargo transport before being decommissioned and acquired by the Florida Keys Artificial Reef Association. In 1985, the Eagle was intentionally sunk to create an artificial reef, enhancing marine life and attracting divers to the area.

The Wreck Site
Lying in about 110 feet of water, the Eagle sits on its starboard side, partially broken apart due to hurricanes over the years. Despite this, it remains an incredible dive site with swim-throughs, open cargo holds, and sections covered in coral, sponges, and other marine growth. The wreck’s structure provides shelter for a variety of marine species, including goliath groupers, barracudas, moray eels, and schools of snapper and angelfish.

Diving the Eagle
The Eagle is considered an advanced dive due to its depth and potential strong currents. However, experienced divers are rewarded with stunning views of the wreck and abundant marine life. The ship is also a popular spot for underwater photography, especially when visibility is good.
