This Day in History March 12th 1947

📆 On March 12th, 1947, President Harry Truman addressed Congress and laid out what became known as the Truman Doctrine—a pledge that the United States would provide military and economic assistance to countries resisting communism, starting with Greece and Turkey. This policy marked the beginning of America’s post-World War II interventionist foreign policy, ultimately leading to decades of entanglements in conflicts around the globe.

At its core, the Truman Doctrine redefined America’s role in the world, committing U.S. resources to fight ideological battles abroad rather than focusing on national defense and prosperity at home. It set a precedent for interventions in Korea, Vietnam, Latin America, the Middle East, and beyond—all in the name of "protecting democracy."

The Truman Doctrine was the start of a dangerous trend that dominated the 20th century and continues to influence our politicians to this day. It started the concept of the US being the "policemen of the world" and laid the ground for military interventions that have cost trillions of dollars and countless lives. It fueled the expansion of the defense industry, ensuring powerful corporations and government agencies had a mutual interest in perpetual war.

These interventions have had a huge cost at home as well. These foreign interventions have provided cover for politicians and bureaucrats to chip away at our rights. Intelligence agencies have grown to spy on the data of all Americans and the draft sent many young men to their deaths and left many others forever broken.

While the Truman Doctrine has been framed as a defense of freedom, it has led to more government control, more war, and more unintended consequences. America should seek peace and lead by example, not force. Through diplomacy, trade and commitments to individual liberty, rather than entangling alliances and military aggression. We must reject the mistakes of the past and embrace a foreign policy of peace and non-intervention.
