Hans Geiger is convinced that Switzerland will remain a major financial center even without UBS. Because it is too big for UBS, its headquarters should be located in America – with its dollar reporting, it is essentially already a US bank.

UBS is the largest banking group in Switzerland and one of the largest in the world. It operates as a globally active universal bank. In contrast to many foreign institutions, it is the most important bank nationwide, even in domestic retail banking, although regionally, the Raiffeisen banks and cantonal banks in particular have a larger market share. Over time, UBS has acquired numerous banks, including some with long traditions, and dissolved them into its own group or reorganized and integrated them into specialized units (1990: Bank Leu; 1993: Schweizerische Volksbank; 1997: merger of the Union Bank of Switzerland (SBG) and the Swiss Bank Corporation (SBC); 2023: Credit Suisse). The workforce of what were then two major banks was 35,549 full-time equivalents in 2019 and 35,810 full-time equivalents in 2021, of which 22,914 were in Switzerland...
