The Never-Realised Story of the Class 38

Greetings everyone! :D

This week, we look at a locomotive that was never actually fully established as to what its role was meant to be within the ranks of the British Rail fleet, with all early concepts and available information pointing to a Type 3 replacement known as the Class 38, which would compliment the heavyweight Class 60 as a means of fighting back against privately ordered locomotives such as the Class 59.

Had the Class 38 come to pass, its presence would have likely refaced the entire UK fleet roster for the 1990s and 2000s, presenting what was essentially a locomotive of size and performance comparable to the later Class 67, but delivering it in the late 1980s or early 1990s, though as is, the Class 38 would never even make it to the stage of a concept drawing, let alone a full production locomotive, and the role this engine may have filled on the British railway network would instead be the domain of the earlier Class 37 going into the new millennium.
