What "A Whiter a Shade of Pale" by Procol Harum is Really About

Released as their debut record on May 12th, 1967, "A Whiter Shade of Pale" is a legendary song by the English rock band Procol Harum. The single reached number 1 on the UK Singles Chart and stayed there for six weeks; while, without much promotion, it reached number 5 on the US Billboard Hot 100. One of the anthems of the 1967 Summer of Love, A Whiter Shade of Pale is one of the most successful singles of all time, having sold more than 10 million copies worldwide, and being covered over 1000 times by other artists since its release.

Although the mesmerizing music of A Whiter Shade of Pale was written by Procol Harum vocalist/pianist Gary Brooker and organist Matthew Fisher, the lyrics were written by their friend and band associate Keith Reid. A poet in his own right, Reid's verses to A Whiter Shade of Pale are both illustrative and ambiguous all at once, and as such, many have debated the song's meaning since its first release.
