Hidden Secrets of the Holy Rosary and the Annunciation…
Our Lady once told Saint Bridget she received an indescribable thrill of her soul and body when Christ was conceived in her womb. And we can cause Our Lady to remember that moment every time we say a certain prayer with attention. What is this prayer and the story behind it? Stay tuned.
Today, I want to tell you the details of the Annunciation that very few people know about because our story comes from the visions given to us by the Mother of God to Sr. Maria of Agreda, whose body remains incorrupt to this day.
So, why aren’t these details included in Scripture? Because, as Sr. Maria points out, the world itself couldn’t contain that many books! But we are blessed with the gift of Church-approved private revelations.
As the true story goes, the Archangel Gabriel was in Heaven preparing himself for the Annunciation, the moment when he would announce to Our Lady that she was chosen to be the Mother of God. As he stood before the throne of God, the Blessed Trinity gave him the very words he would use to address Our Lady—part of the prayer we now know as the “Hail Mary.”
At last, the time came. God descended from Heaven to the Holy House of Loreto, where Our Lady lived. Although all Three Persons of the Blessed Trinity descended, only the Second Person became incarnate. With God came the Archangel Gabriel, who appeared with more glory than any angel Our Lady had ever seen. His face was resplendent with light. On his breast, he bore a most beautiful cross, which disclosed the mystery of the Incarnation he had come to announce. And the Archangel Gabriel was not alone; many thousands of beautiful angels accompanied him.
They entered into the chamber where Our Lady was praying. She was the most beautiful woman God ever created, exteriorly beautiful and interiorly filled with divine grace. She was tall and had eyes with a “dovelike sweetness.” [1]
Upon seeing Archangel Gabriel, Our Lady wanted to reverence him, but he wouldn’t allow it. Instead, he bowed before her and recited the words of the Hail Mary: “Hail Full of Grace, the Lord is with Thee: Blessed art Thou amongst women!” [2]
At that moment, Our Lady interiorly understood the Lord had chosen her for His Mother. And in her humility, she thought herself unworthy, but the angel told her not to fear.
Our Lady’s response was a question: “How shall this be, for I know not man?” [3] You see, Our Lady had made a vow to remain a virgin.
Archangel Gabriel’s answer was simple but profound: It is easy for God to make her a mother without man’s cooperation. The Holy Ghost would come upon her, and the Most High would overshadow her.
Here, Sr. Maria says Our Lady didn’t receive any special graces to help her decide. She was left with only the regular means of grace. This means her decision was made with complete faith, hope and charity!
At the moment Our Lady made her fiat, her Immaculate Heart contracted by the force of her love and bled three droplets that became the Body of Christ, Our Lord. She then entered the Beatific Vision and saw God face to face.
This moment is pivotal because it’s a moment Our Lady relives every time the Hail Mary is prayed with attention. It’s true, Saint Alphonsus Liguori, Doctor of the Church, says the Hail Mary reminds Our Lady of the Annunciation when her Immaculate Heart bled droplets that became God Incarnate in her womb. That’s not an experience to forget.
Saint Louis de Montfort tells us that praying the Hail Mary with attention is the most excellent complement to Our Lady and makes her inclined to give us graces to overcome our sins, fulfill our vocation and duties and become saints. So, when we pray the Hail Mary, we should do it to renounce our fallen hearts with the sentiments of Our Lady’s sinless and Immaculate Heart.

But at Fatima, Our Lady asked that we pray not only the Hail Mary, but also the Holy Rosary. And rather than praying it with intentional distractions which offend Our Lady and please the devil, Saint Louis de Montfort advises: Pray always with true devotion! I cannot leave you with better advice. With this, Our Lady is sure to reward you.
